Firstly, you might want to try your local section on www.craigslist.org -- there is a music section and you can post something about looking for band members. You'll probably get tons of responses. Good luck. If that doesn't work well... I don't know if you are in college or high school but maybe try posting and/or asking around at school. Some colleges have music programs and you may be able to arrange meeting some of them.

I was a professional musician for 13 years (yes it was my main source of income) and my first question is why in the world would ANYONE want to start a band (of course I'm old and jaded and wouldn't trade my experiences on the stage for anything). All of the ideas I've seen here are valid but I wanted to let you know that you've hit on what I think is the key consideration in choosing band members, commitment. There are plenty of fabulous players out there who won't show up for practise, refuse to learn their parts and sometimes even no show for gigs. Give me an average player who is committed to making the music work and I'll take them over a cocky procrastinating musician who plays guitar like Clapton, keys like Billy Joel, drums like Buddy Rich and sings like the director of a angel choir. If comes down to talent vs. commitment, take commitment every time.

You can try putting up flyers for players up at your local music stores and you can do some research- find out if there are only bands playing around, especially open jams. Great place to find like-minded- people! Bottom line you need to get out into the music scene and get to know everybody you can! Good luck!

advertise

post flyers around your neighborhood/city

in record stores
music stores
hand out flyers at other gigs and shows
maybe around your school or the nearest collage campus

thats what i did
in milwaukee
we got probably 13 calls for a drummer in 1 week

like someone else said
kind of get known in the music scene
hah

then , not only will you get band members but connections

good luck from one musician to another

Go to your local music stores and see if they have a bulliten board were you can advertise your desire to start a band or join one. That way you'll only get responses from local people.
