I have been trying to type a document using Microsoft Word. Have used it many times with no problems. Now I have a problem. About halfway through typing the document, Word completely closes. No warning or error message or anything. Just suddenly back to wallpaper. I have anti-virus and firewall and all that stuff running. Any ideas why this is happening and what to do about it. Hurry. My essay is due tomorrow!

If it's a recent version, then it SHOULD automatically save your document periodically in the background... Have you tried rebooting your computer and reopening the document? It should recover it to the last auto save point.

I can't help with what the problem is - it may be that your computer just had a bit of a brain fart and shut it down. Try rebooting your computer and reopening word to see if it brings the document back up. If that doesn't work... You'll probably just have to bite the bullett and rewrite your essay! If it does it again, get some coffee and a hot pack and handwrite it. Most teachers will accept a neatly handwritten essay if a computer is unavailable or playing silly buggers!

As for the future, make sure you have a full antivirus product running, not just a free one you downloaded as it doesn't catch a tenth of the viruses a fully featured, PAID version does.

Have you overloaded your memory? Are you aware that wallpaper and screensavers run in the background while you run other programs?

- Suggest you set wallpaper and screensaver to blank or none.
- When in Word, File, Save frequently. Everything you have done up to that point will at least be on disk.
- in Word, Tools, Options, Save -- opt to have a backup copy made of all files. This way, even if for some reason you lose your document, the last "save" will be on disk.
- backup files will gather at the top of your folder list and are easily deleted, but come in handy sometimes.
- you cannot edit a backup -- you have to open it and save it to a new name.

First save your work.
Save your work every 2 minutes.
You will probably end up reinstalling the program.
But for tonight. Save Save Save.
Also get out of EVERYTHING else you can.
Clean and defrag if you have time.
I have had computers that would not run word and anyhing else at the same time.
