it depends on the type of depression. if it is organic depression, where the brain is not functioning properly. for that , medication, prescribed by a psychiatrist, not a GP is the only answer. the other is cognitive depression, which is they way we think. for that , cognitive therapy, or talking to a trained professional, such as a psychologist helps. some people use meditation, st johns wart, etc and say it helps. be care full with herbs, as it can interact with other medications you are on., hope this helps

Off course there are alternatives. I cant believe someone said "no"!

Try yoga, meditation and tai-chi.
Also regular excercise helps alleviate depression. Not weight lifting mind you, that can make it worse, but cardio exercise like running.

For a depressed person, doing exercise can be very hard so tai-chi, meditation and youga would be better choices depending on how far you are gone.

you can try supplements like saint john's wort. There are many other supplements that are said to work well by many people. Look it up on "google".

Medication is the last resort for when god forbid you may become suicidal or homebound or you wouldnt be able to work/go to school and you have no time to recover by other means - need immediate relief.

You should know that medication will never cure you completely. It's a temporary relief thing, and it can actually make you worse before it will make you better. Only YOU can truly "cure" yourself by learning to acess your subconcious and correct your thinking and way of life. This can be done through the above things with the exception of meds.

The most important thing is to not give up, and not to give in to ideas of people who say that "meds is your only way of life now if you want to continue living a normal life".

Well three things. One, Sex it releases hormones that put your body in a relaxed state to combat stress. Second, a lot of light, If your house is dark try keeping the windows unobstructed and use higher watt lightbubs in your bedroom. Three, excercise releases endorphines into the blood stream that will lift any blahs from your attitude. Try a three day a week program. Four, is not from the books it's from life, stop over thinking and do something, keep busy. It's hard to be depressed when your to involved in some task to think about it..Be well.

Well, seeking for counseling is a good advice but NOT the remedy. You need to do both..Depression is a serious disease such as asthma, or migraine. People has to be careful with this disease because sometimes can interfere with the normal activities and destroy people's life. Depression has to do with some neurotransmitters that are secreted in our brains, so it is a biological and chemical imbalance that needs to be controlled with the medications that are available to manage this type of disease.
