There are tons of them that you've likely never even heard of in the US, but that are actually breeds that breed true (instead of "designer breeds" like the aforementioned "pugapoodle" which is not a breed but a mutt with a fancy name).

There's a good list of rare breeds at the AKC's FSS (Foundation Stock Service) website:

Personally I think the Pyrenean Shepherd is adorable...

Of all the dog breeds the AKC recognizes, the Czechoslovakian Wolfdog has my vote. I read about them and decided I was interested. I then started trying to find a breeder to learn more. My search for a breeder in either North or South America first led me to Czechoslovakia, where I was finally able to come up with one name, in Canada. I contacted the people who told me they had no puppies for sale. I asked them how long it might be before they had any available. They told me they had no idea if or when they might have any because they only had one dog (a male I think) and had no immediate plans to get another.

With only one example on two continents, this breed gets my vote. More rare and I'd call it extinct in the Americas, which with only one specimen, it soon will be.

I limited my answer to AKC recognized breeds. There are other breeds that may have global numbers below those of my choice, but you have to decide what actually qualifies as a breed. The AKC says one thing, the UKC another, the FCI (these are all dog registries) says yet another -- and there are other registries started by people who want to say things like big german shepherds are an entirely different breed than other german shepherds because the AKC and UKC put an upper limit on the ideal German Shepherd's weight.

I'm assuming you are American so I answered using the AKC wisdom on what a dog breed is.

Regards

There are a few websites that list the uncommon breeds. But a few that i know of are
alapaha blue blooded bulldog
Beauceron
Canaan dog
clumber spaniel
karelien bear dog

just a few that i could remember. Go to dogbreedinfo.com and just look through. You will see so many dog breeds that you have never seen before. It is very fun to look at.

Someone mentioned the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever. They are a rare breed. I have never met one, but they sure are beautiful. I used to want one when i was younger, just by looking at a picture, and reading about it, but i have never heard of a breeder around here.

I own a very uncommon dog breed, but shes wonderful. I own a Rat Terrier. Super with other dogs, great with kids, and good protectors. No one on my street has ever seen one before. Actually I never heard of it until I went on Puppyfinders.com. They are newly recognized by the AKC. Considered a rare breed.

My favorite rare dog breed is a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever. I own four of them and show them in the AKC. They have only been offically reconized by the AKC for two years now and are some of the sweets and calmest dogs I have ever meet.

I think the Bench English Setter. I'd like to own one as a pet, but can't find one. Breeders are very fussy about who gets their pups. I like to watch them in shows. It seems like they're always the underdog. Everyone loves the Irish Setter, but no love for the English. really.
English Setters get no respect.

my absolute favorite breed is a cavalier king charles spaniel,
they are ,in my opinion, the most adorable dogs i've ever seen. they are great for first time owners, highly intelligent, easy to care for (i currently have 2), able to stay home for lengthy periods of time, and do not need massive amounts of exercise. and i have been around many different types of dogs.
