are water lilies and water hyacinth the same?

They're very different plants, from different families. Water lilies are "lily pads" which have a broad floating leaf and a single big round flower, usually white or yellow. Water hyacinths have an inflated bladder for floating, with a leaf and flowering stalk of many lavender flowers. See pics; the first has hyacinths surrounded by water lilies (leaves only); the second is hyacinth flowers; the rest are all hyacinths in the genus Nymphaea.

These are two entirely seperate plants from two distinct different plant families. The Water Lily is (usually) a Nymphaeaceae species; a Water Hyacinth (which, also, is not a hyacinth at all) is Eichhornia species in the Lily order.

I guess you could take it a step further and ask about a Hyacinth growing in a glass of water (a popular type of flowering plant which became popular in Victorian times to grow in a glass of water) - but, that would be something entirely different. :)
