first of all if you look at it jeep has been around for way longer in the 4x4 business then almost any car company out there so they know in a sense what a car needs to be capable off road without mods like the rubicon wrangler. the fj cruiser is new and its not as good because it has a rear solid axle which is good but it has an independent front which is not so good. ask any true 4 wheeler and they will tell you solid axles are way better for wheeling then independent. where the jeep wrangler has front and rear solid axles which give way better flexing capabilities.

im not sure how dependable the fj is but i know for a fact that the wrangler is really dependable i mean my brother has a cherokee with like 200,000 miles on it and its still goin strong so. reliability in a jeep is not an issue and anyone who tells you otherwise has never been in one, known anyone who owns one, or doesnt own one.

so if i were you i would go with the jeep if you are into the wheelin thing its not goin to leave you high and dry like the fj and there is almost unlimited possibilities with mods.

If you want a true 4X4 get a jeep. If you want a wanna be 4X4 go a head and buy that FJ cruiser, just let me know when you want to be pulled out of a mud hole your stuck in. Jeep's are known for their offroad abilities. The FJ Cruiser is too new to determine reliability, but the 4.0L inline 6 engines in the Jeep Wranglers are bulletproof, and run for ever when taken care of. Those new toyota cruisers look like a toy car and the 4WD in those aren't really meant for offroad use. I'll take my jeep any day over any other so called offroad vehicle.

uummm well seeing that jeep has been around for almost "FOREVER" id go with something that's popular and will never go out of style " LIKE A JEEP" toyota's are over priced turds that have a bad service record and there parts are MUCHO $$$$.. so i'd go for the Jeep WRANGLER and not a toyota especially that RAV 4 unless you want people to think your....... well GAY // the fj may look kool but its just a rav 4 underall that plastic....

I'd go with the Wrangler, I have an 82 CJ7 that I turned into a rockcrawler, but before that it would still go more places than about any other stock vehicle, and they can be modified to look really good for fairly cheap. They also run great and have plenty of power, though highway speeds may be a little low. (I only have experience with the 4.0 liter straight six, not the new 3.8 V6, but 2006's look better anyway)

The Jeep is a better offroader. The FJ was built for the street. Go drive both of them and do more reading on both of them.

Wrangler has been on the market forever, is used in many foreign countries, and has decent reliability. The new FJ is too new to judge reliability.
