I wanted to breed my female and male parakeet and I was told otherwise because of all the risks. What are they and if breeding Parakeets really worth it?

Me again. I would have replied earlier, but I hit my daily limit last night. :P

http://www.avianweb.com/breeder.htm There's a good link for lots of information, including some of the risks.

To list the ones that are most common that come to mind:
- Parent rejecting/killing babies
- Hen becoming egg bound (this is the most common and most life threatening risk)
- Hen dying due to being egg bound or malnourished
- Chicks being malnourished
- Eggs opening too early
- Chicks having deformities
- Chicks having splay legs
- Chicks with sour crop, burned crop, or gas filled crop
- Chicks being injured (VERY fragile)
- Chicks dying or getting ill from temperature fluctuation or other environmental or parental factor
- Long-term effects on the hen
- Exhausting the hen, draining too many nutrients that she needs in too small a span of time
- Premature death in hen or chicks
- Pairing does not work out

The vast majority of the risks of breeding require avian vet intervention, and another risk on top of that is you may be short on funds, maybe too short to save a bird's life. Breeding requires a significant stability financially and emotionally, because the fact is you will more than likely lose or come close to losing chicks or even a hen at one point or another.

I still suggest you see an avian vet (or experienced, reputable breeder), or call one up, to ask specifically if you would be prepared for breeding and if your budgies are healthy enough to breed. They'll know what you're dealing with and will be able to suggest more specified care for your birds. I bet they can also name lots more risks - they've probably seen it all, done it all.

Thank you for not brushing me off and rethinking this! Most people would brush off such a response, but this alone says you're willing to put your birds' well being first. Kudos to you!

Let's see, risks in breeding any animal includes genetic abnormalities, and maternal death. Some birds die from egg binding where the egg gets stuck in the canal. Breeding Parakeets requires commitment and dedication and can be rewarding for the experience alone. Proper diet, a proper nest box, nesting material and a compatible healthy pair are necessary elements for success. Weigh it out. You may really enjoy the experience and share your experience with others. Children can also learn to respect animals and enjoy the birth and rearing of chicks. Do your research and see if this is for you. Have a tweet year.

The female can get an egg stuck in her, and after that happens, its not long before she dies. Its happened many times to my birds. Also, if you don't limit how much she breeds, she will get tired and may die earlier.
