There are many factors to be concerned about trees. If you have a brand new home with a basement and have no trees. Guess what happens when it rains alot... all that water goes into your basement.
If you have a tree that's too near your home, it could mess up the infastructure of your house. Cause cracks, clog gutters, and falling branches that take down power lines.
Dead trees? Termite magnet
Huge trees near your house? It could fall and cause damage to your home.
Too many trees may block sunlight and make your house colder. Not enough trees could not provide enough shade from the sunlight... you'll be paying an arm and a leg to cool the house.

I guess you like paying your high electric bills. They tell you to put shrubs around your house for the cooling effect. In photosynthesis, water is a byproduct and on the back of the leaves. So when under a tree and it feels cool, it is not the shade but the wind and the water which provide the majority of the cooling effect. That is one reason to have trees around as they will keep a certain area just a little cooler. Also trees beneficial to the environment. What do you think keeps a lot of the dirty air down. LA started a planting trees project. Now their smog is half of what it was 20 years ago, but with twice as many cars.

You would not want to plant a willow tree by a septic system or drainage of any kind. Black Walnut Trees give off some kind of chemical that prevents other trees in growing near it.
I had a friend plant a tree that grew 10 feet in one year, but its roots were growing even faster. They ended up cutting it down.
You don't have to know about all the trees, you can research them on the net.
Trees do increase the value of property, especially oak. However they do grow slow. You probably should know how close to plant them to the home, you don't want it to affect the foundation

trees are the key.
they can lower your mortgage rates by 1/2.
the wrong types of trees can harm u, or even worse kill you. u do NOT want a dogwood to be on your property in the summer, or on tuesdays.
if u dont know your trees u should definitely rent and not own a home. its probably the most important thing must know as a homeowner.

off the top of my head - to know if the trees are healthy or not (because they might fall on the house, and getting rid of a tree is expensive)
Also - as someone who is rather allergic, that sort of thing might come in handy -
Who knows - I'm hoping to someday be a homeowner, I'll come back and check the other answers ;)

Let me rephrase your question - why a homeowner should have some knowledge of the specific trees on his or her property:
-the tree could have a nasty habit of breaking foundations and/or smashing into water pipes - you need to know what kind of trees do that and how close the trees are to your house
-the tree could shed both leaves and bark and leave you with a southern California type wildfire situation if you aren't hauling the debris away all the time
-you cannot believe how many leaves a really big tree can shed while at the same time the tree can cool down your house in summer
-the tree may attract birds that like to poop on your property or the tree itself could drop nasty, sticky things at some time in the year
-tree could be diseased and you basically are going to have to cut it down which can be expensive if you have to lower each part rather than just cut the thing at the base and yell timber!
-in the city, trees tend to spread over into your neighbors' yards - you need to know what kind of tree you are dealing with because your neighbor may come over as soon as you move in and say that the tree needs to be totally removed or they will take you to court or call the city.
-you need to be able to distinguish between real trees and fake trees - fake trees being trees that are more like weeds than like oak or maple trees. Fake trees don't have the same structural integrity as real trees and you could find that the tree just starts literally falling apart and needs to be cut down
-you need to know if your tree requires pruning to be healthy or if any pruning could harm it
-you need to know different types of fruit trees if you have a nut or fruit tree - to know if it is real or ornamental and what kind of tree it is so you know how to look up about it - if you have a pecan tree you will want to know what kind of pecan tree
-if you live where there are hurricanes or strong winds of any type you will want to know what kind of root system your tree have to know if you are going to come out one day and find it on top of the house or family car
-you especially need to know about trees if you are planning to plant some of them - you need to know where to plant, how far away from other trees and plants, things like that
-it can also be helpful to know about your tree or like me you can have what you think is an evergreen tree growing next to your swimming pool when it fact you have some kind of tree that sheds its needles like crazy and messes up your swimming pool and devours your pool chemicals- and I have no idea what kind of tree that is except it looks pretty

Watch the ones that can attack your S**t tank! I just had that problem and it cost me over $2,000. If you have a willow or one of those Chinese bastards CUT IT DOWN! Also in hurricane country they are a liability if they could potentially land on some body or their house. HOWEVER, there are some varieties that can provide valuble shade to lower AC in the summer and shelter your home from chilling winds in the winter time...and not cause property damage.

greater possibly the tree of wisdom. With training available, with purely a click of the mouse and, training for all...there heavily isn't any issue with offering wisdom or, studying. The tree of goodness, in those circumstances, will possibly be fruitless. the international isn't what it was once; the human beings are not what they was once. The harvester could have a complicated time finding end result from the tree of goodness.

There's a kind of eucalyptus tree that sheds its limbs. A few years back, a falling tree limb from one of these killed someone. Not good.
You'll want trees that will not lift up the sidewalk in front of your house.
You don't want trees that are prone to putting roots into your pipes.
