Make sure your passport has not expired!
Take care of your mailbox.......direct your mails to your local post office while you're gone.

Read about where you are going. It will help build excitement for the trip and also it's nice to know more about the place you are visiting. If it's a place that speaks a foreign language study up on some basic phrases so that you can attempt to communicate in the local language--that goes a long way toward winning you friendly help in a strange place. If you need any special vaccinations then get those started. If you want pre-booked hotels you can go ahead and do those to make sure places don't fill up. Other than that, you're set until closer to time to leave. Then, depending on how long you are going for, you should arrange for someone to check on your house, notify utilities and such that you will be away and see if you can delay billing (or leave checks with someone you trust and they can pay the bills.) Stop your mail or have someone collect it and make arrangements for how you are going to get money while traveling. Start packing a few days ahead of time so that you don't have a last minute rush.

If you need vaccinations get those started: http://www.mousetourstravels.com/international-travel-health-vaccinations.html

If you're leaving the house empty here are some tips to think about:
Tell a trusted neighbor you'll be away.
If your car is alarmed and left at the house alone, leave spare keys with the trusted neighbor.
Arrange for kennels or caretakers for cats and dogs.
Throw or give away fresh food.
Have a neighbor pick up mail (or have the post office hold it.)
Unplug electrical appliances - except for freezer and refrigerator.
Leave spare house keys with someone you trust.
Ask someone to water houseplants/garden if necessary
Remember to lock all windows and doors
Set timers to make your house appear lived in
Be discreet about going away to reduce the risk of burglars.

Keep reading about your trip so you'll know more and stay excited! Happy travels... even if you don't travel the world... just remember that life is a journey... embrace and enjoy it! http://www.mousetourstravels.com
