Visit your local shelter, a mixed dog is just if not better than some pure-breds. Most shelters will let you get some one on one time, perhaps walk them and/or play with them. I had Betty; a Llasa/Cockapoo mix that was the love of my life. She loved anyone coming through the door, many friends wanted to take her home for the 16.7 years I had had her. (She is still with us in heart and mind, buried in the backyard next to her escape route she could get a chance to go visiting the kids & neighbors).
I could take her anywhere and everywhere, she was a lady at all times. She did many road trips with me and my kids, and/or adult friends. She captured your heart and just wanted to be near you unabtrusively. She was 7 mos. when I took her from a lady who was on her way to the shelter, because she kept getting fleas! Mind you she flea-bathed the dog weekly but never treated house of tie-out spot she promptly returned her to. Can't imagine why there was a problem. . . I was gifted Betty as far as I'm concerned.
Most "Mutts" (I say this with the greatest love and compassion) have nice temperments are eager to have a family that will love & care for them, they are usually heartier than pure breds, ask anyone whose owned both.
If you want a dog for your kids, KNOW you will also have to take up the slack. Kids love the fun and games but not always the care & clean-up. When my kids were that age our family used to donate any spare cash/change/bottle return $ to the "vet jug" because inevitably there may come a time they will need a boo-boo to fix, or an x-ray. You just never know, so saving ensures proper care if and when it ever happens. It also involves the kids in realizing what it takes to own a pet regardless of your socio-economic standing.

I would not even recommend getting a small dog. Many, if not all small dogs will not tolerate things that kids can't help doing, like, pulling the ears and tail, playing with his face, poking it etc.
Little dogs only ever do well with older, considerate children. At 8 years old, or even 10 years old, the child is still very clumsy and could drop the puppy.
Someone suggested a Yorkie --- DO NOT GET A YORKIE! Some can be VERY bad when around kids and they won't get along with them. I would suggest get a medium sized dog. A good medium sized dog is a Beagle. They aren't too big, even when fully grown.

With that age group as long as the children are experienced around animals they should do fine with almost any breed. They are at an age where they should know right from wrong and not hurt the dog. Labs are great, my dad has 2 of them. Poms are sometimes ok but as they get older they can snap fast. Bassethounds, Beagles..... Like others recommended to me on here take you little ones to the dog shelter and have them interact with the dogs then you will know.

The smallest breed is Chihuahua. And No i wouldnt recommend a chi to anybody, weather part owner or full owner to anybody under 13. Even if, i still wouldnt. You may think you can handle it but trust me, even i at 18 had a tough time keeping up with my chi. Its not just that but its because they are so fragile. Even the most well mannered kids can easily slam a door at a chi or accidentaly drop it when it wiggled. Also, chis are very popular and there are many many BYB out there who dont properly socailize their pups so thats a problem. And chis cannot handle any teasing or they will snap and they owners will send the dog to the nearest shelter for no reason only because they ignored the fact that chis arent ment for kids of any age.

Go to YAHOO! and type in "dog breed selector" Several questionnaires will come up. They will ask you about your lifestyle and preferences. This should give you a good idea about the breed good for you. Once you get it narrowed down, go to akc.com and look at the breed standard. Then you may want to volunteer at a shelter or rescue so you can meet the dogs in person and see if you connect. Another resource might be to go to a dog show. Whatever you do, don't go to a pet shop or a backyard breeder

Yorkies are very good with young children. They do not shed, (if the kid has allergies,) and they do not bite, they are never aggressive.

Boston Terrier....I had one for 16 years...till we had to put him to sleep.......We got him when my oldest child was 12 and the youngest was 8.......he was the best!! He loved to play w/ them....and stayed by their sides when they were inside and out. I miss him terribly........and it's been 7 months.
