We are getting married and money is extremely tight. When we get married, will the student loan people come after me and garnish my wages?

Well I can tell you this from my personal experience. My income tax return didn't come back to me within a reasonable time, and when I called the irs I found out that it was taken for an outstanding loan my wife had. If you file jointly YES.

In almost all cases, a married couple legally share everything jointly. So yes, you take on your spouse's debts when you get married.

A marriage councilor would probably point out that if this is a problem for you then you're still in a "my money / your money" frame of mind instead of "our money" and maybe you need to think things through and talk things out some more before taking the big step. (i.e. Why would you _not_ want to help your spouse take care of his/her financial problems?)
