I haven't seen that movie for at least 10 (15?) years! We learned something about it in school at the time... and I think they mentioned something about religious symbolism. Sorry can't help you anymore!

Interesting question... I read the book about 6 years ago and I've seen the movie a few times as well, but never noticed any religious symbolism. Then again, I was pretty young back then. Also, I'm not quite sure what you may be referring to by religious symbolism in the movie.

I haven't read the book, but it seems like the movie does, really and truly. I will have to see it again to point out specifics. I remember a lot of uprising and magic ... that has to represent something.
