Imagine everything you have in a major city on the US--- and throw out 90% of it! Waikiki has a little of most of what passes for entertainment elsewhere--- theaters, shopping, some shows, clubs, etc. But most people go to Las Vegas or LA for all that--- they definitely do it better! Or New York for 'culture"--- museums, operas, etc.
Why come here? Picture beautiful beaches and water sports of all kinds-- picture incredible scenery and hiking trails-- picture small towns (away from Honolulu) that seem more like what you'd find in the 50's or 60's-- especially on the outer islands (like Big Island).
Be ready to leave behind uptight rush rush attitudes--- and kick back into "Hawaii time" where things happen "Bime bye"...
Instead of exhaust fumes, smell flower scented trade-winds. Instead of ice storms, watch palm trees sway in the sunshine.
Actually--- our problem is more how to keep everyone from moving here! Honolulu is starting to look more like S CA with a much better climate, because of all the condos and housing developments going up.

There are, in fact, several excellent sources of entertainment on each of the islands beyond the beautiful beaches and relaxed way of life.

For example, there is a growing and expanding improv comedy scene on Oahu. At the moment, there are five active improv groups all of whom perform on a regular basis.

There is also a strong stand-up comedy scene on Oahu. Sharkey's in Aiea is a great place to go to see both local and national acts.

There are also several excellent community theatres - though the one I'd recomend checking out is Kumu Kahua Theatre. Kumu Kahua focuses on plays by and about the people of Hawaii, which means you will see mostly original work about Hawaii at it. The Arts at Mark's Garage also hosts some exciting original work that you're not going to see anywhere else.

Hawaii's visual arts scene is also very strong. There are a large number of galleries - notable The Contemporary Museum and The Academy of Arts. Both are worth a visit.

Honolulu's Symphony is also excellent - as is the Hawaii Opera Theatre and Hawaii Ballet. Speaking of music, the Hawaiian Music scene is vital and vibrant. You can hear everything from local style music to reggae to punk to rock to Irish to whatever at the different bars and clubs around town. There are listings in the papers every week for these bands.

The University of Hawaii at Manoa is one of the only places in America that routinely stage theatre from Asia in English. Kabuki, Beijing opera and Kyogen are just three of the many different styles of theatre you can see here that you won't see in most other states.

And, most importantly, the hula scene out here is incredible (naturally). If your entire perception of hula is women in mu'umu'u's dancing to Don Ho, you are in for some surprises in Hawaii. I would encourage you to check out kahiko style hula as soon as you can - very exciting stuff.

Anyhow, Hawaii has a ton of stuff to do besides hanging out at our beautiful beaches and eating at our amazing restaurants.
