It depends on the teenagers symptoms - ALWAYS consult your doctor before you make any decisions about such a matters such as this.

There are several antidepressants on the market today here are a couple: They are all SSRI's (Selective Seritonin Reuptake Inhibitors) - it is though that they cause the seratonin uptake level in the brain to be decreased - and this leads to a more anit-depressed mood.

Prozac - the OLDEST one - it is replaced by newer better drugs now - don't choose this one first.

Lexapro - very good

Paxil - also very good - especially with bipolar tendencies

Zoloft - not as good - but still pretty decent

Wellbutrin - like zoloft - especially good for those who wish to quit smoking

Remeron - good for mild depression - especially when accompainied by sleep loss

There are nurmerous others - let your doctor fill you in on the others - these are the most common ones.

First I quote:
"A Food and Drug Administration study seems to confirm suspicions that antidepressant drugs may increase the risk of suicidal behavior in children and teens."
npr.org

Before reading any answer, make SURE that the antidepressant is the LAST resort. The absolutely LAST resort. Too many people enter the routine/addiction of buying their way out of depression and taking antidepressants nowadays.

But if it is a serious condition, my suggestion is taking the antidepressant for a SHORT period of time and changing the daily routine. Depression is a sign that things aren't swell with a current routine, changing that routine by doing exercise, reading a book, going religious, anything out of the norm that makes the person happy is usually a better antidepressant (especially for teens, I should know) than drugs.

Now, for treatment: Prozac is a generally good overall solution, but sometimes a placebo (sugar pill) works just as good by fooling the head. Try a little Prozac, then go for twelve weeks of placebo sugar pills while changing routine and generally improving living conditions by refreshing one's self.

Again, I wouldn't feel like a responsible human being if I don't reiterate on this enough: PROZAC IS ADDICTIVE. Many people, my mother included, have problems leaving it. It is a problem as much as it is a solution. Use it WISELY. Get the person used to Prozac, and fool him or her by using sugar pills, no need to go crazy over Prozac or any other antidepressant.

Please, think about it well.

as far as i be responsive to, the justifications are uncertain, even even though it form of feels to maintain on with to all of the SSRI's & SSNRI's, including Paroxetine. some human beings interior the psychological well being field have faith that, even if a critically depressed guy or woman would experience suicidal, they have neither the flexibility, nor the making plans ability to organise such an attempt. there may be a "window of danger", interior the 1st couple of weeks, following antidepressant use, while the antidepressant result has not yet all started to realize valuable levels, yet ability levels, and making plans information are commencing as much as be restored, and that's in this time-physique, particularly with adolescents, while the possibility of a suicide attempt is at its maximum. Their impulsivity, and lack of ability/unwillingness concerning effects, and absence of experience base all upload to this. that's been presently son that the strategies does not attain finished progression until around 24 -25, with maximum human beings.

If you want to go the holistic rout take 5-htp, and Kava Kava. Kava Kava can be in a pill or in a powder you can drink as tea.

I have gon through 2 bouts of post partom depression. The first on a prescription and going off the meds was really rocky. The secon time I treated it naturally with lots of exercise and taking these herbs. It was much easier to come off of these because they are natural.

Kava can also be used as a muscle relaxant for anytime you have tension problems.

Keep off the drugs. Lift weights or jog or walk. Just exercise more. It releases endorphins into the bloodstream and elevates mood. Also try eating 100% bakers chocolate or garlic. They are also natural mood enhancers.

having wealthy parents to spoil them, allowing them to rid their vocabulary of the word "responsibility", thus not having a care in the world so they can hang out with their friends and treat others who don;t have it as good as them like the crap on the bottom of their shoes.
