Poodle were actually bred to retrieve downed birds out of the water.
Believe it or not, the "foofy" haircut originally had a purpose. If the fur was to long, it would weigh them down in the water and they would sink. So they began to shave certain areas to make them lighter. However they could not shave all of the fur off because of the cold climate. They had to leave fur around the chest to protect the lungs, fur around the hips and ankles kept the joints from becoming stiff. Furry ears = warm ears and so on.

They were bred for hunting and retrieving water fowl. That's why they get that crazy hair cut for dog shows. Their hair is so thick, it weighs them down in the water, so they had to be shaved. They left important areas like the joints and kidneys covered, as well as the tip of the tail, which serves as a flag. And despite what everyone thinks, the breed did not originate in France, they were originally a German breed. The French nobility liked the breed so much, they adopted it.
