I have this question for MSE:

Coiled springs ought to be very strong and stiff. Si3N4 is a strong, stiff material. Would you select this material for a spring? Explain.

I looked up this material, and I found that it's very strong and stiff, and i figure it WOULD be good for springs, but when I researched it more, I realized that springs are rarely made of it and it's more often as plates, part bodies, screws, etc.

So does that mean it's not good for springs? Thats what I assume, but I don't see why not. Please help?

If you're working with nano technology, then yes, silicon nitride would be an excellent choice. It is easily deposited on a silicon wafer, easily patterned, and easily etched.
