Lithium is a salt that is used to treat Bipolar disorder.
The main difference between lithium and other medicines is that it is processed in the kidney, so that if you are on lithium you need to have lithium levels done regualary and kidney function tests done regualarly.
Lithium is available in extended release versions and is very cheap. It is best used as an anti-manic agent, but does have some anti-depression properties as well.

It is a mood altering drug for bipolar disorder. The way a Dr. tells if your taking Lithium or not is through a blood test. Because some levels of Lithium are harmful to your liver.

Lithium is the classic standard drug to treat Bipolar disorder. It is considered a mood stabilizer. If I am correct it is a salt (lithium salts) and everyone has a bit of it in their body. As a mood stabilizer it can help to prevent or lesson depression and help to prevent or lesson manic episodes. Manic episodes are ones with less sleep than usual, euphoria that becomes anger, more desire for sex or spending money than usual, racing thoughts, etc. Now, many times physicians are using medications that are antiseizure medications to help with this disorder. It is an illness of the brain, so it stands to reason that another medication to treat a brain disorder could help this one. Hope this helps.

lithium is an element...it is used for leveling out manic-depressent disoder. your highs wont be as highs and your depreesion wont be as severe... your doctor or phychiatrist might subcribe lithium medication to you if you need it. This will help level out the chemical imbalance in your brain and make your moods more average than extreme
