All toy breeds, including the chihuahua, are bred to be pampered pets and companions. Even the Toy Fox Terrier, a great athlete with a lot more courage than size, is good for nothing more because it is too small to take on the kind of critters terriers were originally created to handle.

Many of the toy breeds do make decent watch dogs. They cannot handle an intruder, but they can let their owners know there is one. Some of the yappier breeds/specimens are not even good for this because they yap to much for the barking to be meaningful. With the Chihuahua, that value varies widely from dog to dog.

Cuddle with, and laugh at, them. They are good for little else.

Regards

Chihuahuas I've heard were great rat catching dogs and protective in their life. I'm not sure if it was for the Aztecs or in Mexico. I checked out this site: http://zooclub.biz/chihuahua
Here's some'n from History and Origin
The Chihuahua (often nicknamed as Chi) is the smallest dog in the world. The Chihuahua supposedly originated from Mexico and was named by the state Chihuahua. The breed has long history. According the legends these dogs were involved in the religious worship of the Aztecs. Some carvings of The Chihuahua were found in the pyramids of Cholula, Mexico.

They make good companions for elderly and busy people. (They prefer another chi around if left alone often). The breed is apt for injury (especially their legs)and doesn't suit for small children. They are small, dainty but saucy, strong-willed and can bite if vexed. They also tend to be fairly dog-aggressive. They REALLY need early socialization.
These gods/goddesses are very adaptable and hardy, but they are very sensitive to cold temperatures (can you knit?) and can get cold. They also can suffer from heatstroke. The Chihuahua should not live outside. It is the breed for apartment living.

Size and Appearance
Weigh is 2-6 pounds, height 6 - 9 inch. Has cobby body and soft coat. Any color is accepted, fawn, chestnut, sand, silver prevalent. There are two varieties of the Chihuahua: long and smooth coat.
My 2 are mother and daughter, Hannah is 4yo & weighs 10 lbs after having one litter. Guess no diet ever really helped, but vet says shes very healthy, Halle is 2yo & weighs about 7.2 lbs. last time we checked. I got snooked by a lady who insisted the grandparents were AKC but grandmother died shortly after a litter of pups, (One of my dog's parents) which invalidated her AKC was invalidated because of snail mail. I was not interested in breeding, thank God because they both have defects not affecting their health tho'. Get some books, check out sites like this. The more you teach yourself the happier and longer your lives will be together.
Hope I helped.

I read that they were once bred as pampered pets of royalty and they licked the feet of royalty to clean them. They are bad about licking people still today, so I tend to believe this is true.

They were named after a Mexican state, and there's a lot of speculation on how they came to be. The original version is thought to have been long-haired and mute (based on remains found in Mayan temples) So I think they were more of an accident :)

To be mean and nasty and try to bite. Some of the most vicious dogs. Not to say all are vicious, but many are. I've known good and bad ones.
