did you recently get injured??
there are a couple stretches you can try (holding each for a 10-12 count)
put your hands on each side of the door frame and lean forward until you feel the stretch
take you're left arm, raise it over your head and then bend the elbow bringing your hand behind your back. then place your right hand on your left elbow and gently push down. (then reverse)
hold your left arm straight across your chest and use your right arm to push just above your left elbow (then reverse)
after you finish that take a hot shower (as hot as you can stand it) and let the water hit your shoulders and back. you can even do some of the stretches while you're in the shower.
after you get out have someone help you either put some icyhot where you feel the pain.
that should help. i seperated my shoulder in 2000 and still have issues with it occasionally and this is what i do, and it normally helps. if it doesn't start feeling better within a couple days i would talk to a doctor.

Another common cause for this symtpom can be the early stages of heart or respiratory related issues.

I have come across many cardiac patients who only complain of pain between the shoulder blades.

If you have any cardiac history or any family cardic history, your best bet would be to go and get an assesment to rule out this factor.

It could also be a rib fracture, as has already been mentioned...
It could be the introduction of a respiratory problem.

Do you have other symptoms? Nose bleeds? Constant headaches? Pins and needles in extremites...

it takes rest, ice first 24 hours, then heat - try Tiger Balm - it works really well, smells strong but can really help your pain. They sell it at most drug stores and grocery stores.
