It's about making the heavy weight division some credibility. With Randy as champion, he will bring some respect to the division again. Come on, yes Tim is champion, but his fights have been boring and just a waiting game. At least with Randy, he is willing to mix it up with the other fighters. It's about the money and bringing respect and credibility to the heavy weight divsion. One more layer for Cro Cop to get to the champioinship.

Finally!!! Someone who makes sense! This is what I've been saying. Randy IS a great guy and I'm also a fan but he hasn't even fought at heavyweight since the end of 2002. Why the hell should he get a title shot? Just because he's Randy Couture??? That's bbullshit!
I heard Brandon Vera has contract "problems" and has not renewed his contract with the UFC as of yet. Brandon Vera deserves a title shot and I know he would take it from Tim "Zzzzz" Sylvia.

I totally agree, Couture doesn't deserve this fight. He is a legend in the sport and will probably sell more tickets than any other heavyweight contender (aside from CroCop). However, CroCop needs a warm up match and a chance to gain familiarity with the American MMA fanbase, most of whom, don't know **** about Pride and K1. Vera does deserve a title shot, and if he were confident in a victory, he'd sign a contract and not worry about money so long as he has the belt. So his lack of negotiating flexibility tells me that he's not confident that he can beat Silvia and afraid that he'll be destroyed by CroCop somewhere along the way (highly probable).
As for Couture's chances, what makes him think he can beat someone who's take down defense is awesome and has a stronger right hand than Liddell? This event will sell tickets, but I don't expect anything fantastic out of Captain America. Remember Hughes v. Gracie and Ortiz v. Shamrock?

If the UFC desires to be time-honored by way of fact the top mixed martial arts enterprise, they shouldn't save pulling warring parties out of retirement or close to retirement to stand the champions. i haven't seen one sturdy combat come from this ideas-set. Shamrock have been given creamed by utilising Franklin and Hughes v. Gracie exchange right into a humorous tale. Sylvia v. Couture could be greater thrilling than the previous 2, however the effect would be an identical. in spite of if Couture gets the Mainiac to the floor, Sylvia trains with between the right camps in the sport. i'm particular he would be arranged for something the organic will convey at him, and at last get the knockout. I choose Brandon Vera had resigned, as he has a stable possibility of taking down Sylvia before the belt falls into the arms of CroCop. what's up with the guy complaining approximately Anderson Silva? He wrecked prosperous Franklin and Mike Swick could are turning out to be a shot? Mark my words, Anderson Silva will ruin Mike Swick too!

Well, I believe Vera is having contractual problems. So even if he is ready for the fight, he can't.
Therefore, they had to decide who else Sylvia should fight. As far as ratings go, having Couture come back would definitely bring attention to the fight. I believe that UFC is trying to pump UFC up and they view each fight as an opportunity to do that.
Yeah they could have gone to the next guy below Vera, but that guy hadn't earned contender status. At least Couture is a hall of famer so he has at least earned respect as a fighter.
Yeah it would be better if Vera were to fight, but that just isn't going to happen. So this definitely seems to the next best choice given the situation.
I just hope that Couture doesn't end up getting beat though. Because really it would feel kind of dumb to come back and have his bum handed to him on a platter by a guy who looks like he hasn't seen a sit-up in a decade.

Same reason Evander Holyfield received one shot after another even though he was losing. Couture's name sells tickets.
Problem is he is getting in a fight he has no shot of winning. In his prime Couture was never a great heavyweight. He isn't quite strong enough for his grappling to be an absolute advantage at heavyweight. His striking isn't the greatest. Sylvia while awkward and not so polished still hits like a bull. Sylvia isn't quick as Liddell and doesn't put his punches together as well but he still hits harder than Liddell. Sylvia is going to knock Couture out. There is no other way this fight ends.
Couture is going to collect a retirement check.

I like Randy so I'm praying that Tim beats him because I don't really want to see what Mirko could do to Randy. I'm a Miletich fan also, so Tim had better be prepared. I don't think he actually has a drop of a chance against Mirko, but, in the UFC, nobody does. I eventually see Pride fighters coming over and taking the belts. Welterweights and Lightweights will be the toughest divisions for them to get the belts.

$$$, plus I actually think Randy deserves the fight, Vera and the UFC are having alot of contract problems otherwise he probally would be fighting Tim. Doesn't really matter though Cro Cop will be taking and holding on to the belt very soon.

Its about an old guy trying to pull a Rocky. its also about an organization who takes mma fans for granted. It si never about who the strongest man is in the UFC, its only about selling tickets and ppvs the cheapest damn way possible.
I agree with you100 percent, vera should have this fight.
ps...at least theres pride.

use the search function this question has already been addressed many times over, its a good business decision and a win win situtation for the UFC, Couture wins= HUGE upset with Cro Cop vs Randy in the future=$$$ If Sylvia wins= Sylvia is legite because he defeated a legend and a Cro Cop vs the legend killer= $$$. I don't think its a smart match-up for Randy my hats off to him and I hope he wins.
