i have some 2 hour/4.7GB writable dvds but when i try to burn a movie on it, even though its less than 2 hours, its too big. what format should i use so it will fit and will also be playable on most or all dvd players?

dvds usually have to be in the same format. 720x480 mpeg2 however you can change the bitrate on the mpeg2 to give it more or less clarity. DVDShrink can compress the file to fit on a 4.7gb dvd so can nero's recode i think.
