i have 3 partitions one has windows, one is a backup partition that i dont want to screw up and one is an ubuntu partition that i want to have all my stuff for that onperating system on please help becasue i dont know what to mount the windows and the backup partition without doing anything to it, and i think i should mount the ubuntu pation as / because i want to install it there but i am still not sure.

I haven't used Ubuntu.

Ubuntu will be /

find out what partition Windows is on using cfdisk.

Make a folder in /mnt, like "windows"

Command:

X = partition number

mount /dev/hdaX /mnt/windows

your hard drive might be sda instead of hda.

I hope this was what you were wanting to know.
