In California, you absolutely have to bring a parent to court if you are charged as a minor. If you show up in court without a parent the judge will not see you and may order you taken into custody and have a parent notified by the local sheriff or police.
You should let your parent know what is going on so they can be part of the solution.

What state are you in? Have you received anything that tells you what court you are being prosecuted in?
Your state defines what is legally "adult". In Missouri, as someone previously stated, the age of adulthood is 17. This means that as a 17-year-old, you would be prosecuted in the Missouri Circuit Court and charged as an adult. As such, you would not need a parent with you.
If you are referred to the Juvenile Court here, they would contact your parents.

That is up to the individual courts in their jurisdiction; however, in Nevada a parent is required to be in court with a juvenile. Your parents are responsible for you until you are 18 and out of school. They have the right to know and it is the courts obligation to make sure they know.

Let's see... you were bold enough to steal something from school. Be bold enough to tell your parents what you did and that you need them present. If you're gonna act like a man don't do a half-*** routine. Be upfront and blatant going forward. Welcome to adulthood.

It depends on what state you're from, I'm from Missouri, and we don't have to because legally at 17 you can do whatever the hell you want.
