Ummm.... They're not. They are seen as rational.

Your provocative question brings up the question: You are a deeply religious person that believes atheists are ridiculous, or your are an atheist and just asking a silly question for a response. I'll answer the question both ways.
A person that believes in a particular brand of religion will believe that your question is correct, and will give an answer in agreement.
Of course, an atheist will disagree, and put forth his reasons why.
Who is right?
The answer depends on how you are emotionally inclined. Your emotions will make the final decision to agree or disagree, and then back it up with logic.

They aren't seen as ridiculous. Religious people may think they are, but that's not society.
Actually, I should be saying "we" because I am atheist. I didn't know that being rational was ridiculous. I've always thought that believing in something that does not exist (and has no real evidence that it exists) was crazy...But I guess I'm totally off.

I think it's because there isn't a way to divide them up. In Christianity, the people that would otherwise give it a bad name aren't "true Christians". For Muslims, Shi'ites are known to be more violent than Sunnis. There is no clear separation of the "good" and "bad" athiests.

Why do you think they are? Do you know an athiest who you think is ridiculous? Or are you an athiest who someone called ridiculous? Either way I think you're badly generalizing a large sect of human belief (or non-belief, as it were) and need to look at that people behind the (un)faith as individuals.

They are? That's news to me. Last I checked, people couldn't care less whether they were atheist or not. They did find the religious people on streetcorners, preaching through megaphones and on chairs, ridiculous, though.

We still have freedom of religion, freedom of speech, and many other wonderful things in this country. It would be nice if the rocks weren't thrown at other peoples way of thinking. Isn't that what makes this country so great. Ever body thinks that they are right.

we aren't seen as ridiculous in society. it's the uberly religious that see us as ridiculous with their whole 'God is good, God is great' schpiel since we rely more on modern reason and thinking than beliefs as old as the sand. don't get me wrong, i have no problem with religious people, but y'all closed-minded 'it's not in the bible so i refuse to accept it' people need to loosen up and give reason a chance... please?

What exactly makes you laugh when someone says: "Trust in the evidence of the senses and non-contradictory logic: morality and integrity depend on this principle."

Because most people today use God or a god as a crutch. Without that crutch they would have to face reality and they don't want to. So...rather than make themselves look bad, they make those who don't have a "crutch" (atheists) look bad. (By "they" I mean religious people need a crutch, not atheists)
