Never ever buy an American car, Trucks yes, but cars are a waste of money and time. Go for the Nissan Altima... even this car sucks. I wouldn't get a vehicle that copied an exact design from the Saturn Ion. It looks fugly.

The Malibu will be redesigned in the next year or two, and will be much better looking, so I'd pass on the 05 Malibu. The Altima has just had some updating, but not too drastic. My daughter has an 05 Altima, which I drive once in awhile. It's a very nice car. Handles well, rides nice, has plenty of power, even with a 4 cyl. No experience with the Ford.

Nissan Altima.
The Chevrolet Malibu does not hold resale value at all, and depreciates faster than you can blink your eyes. Plus, they do not hold up mechanically over time. (Malibu is great for Buy Here Pay Here lots, because they can buy them cheap all day long).
Ford Focus is good on gas, and that's about it. Has been plagued with recalls, but is ok as a commuter car. Also drops value quickly, and has no resale value.
Altima has good mechanical record, long history compared to the other two, and have great resale values. More Nissans make it over the 100,000 mile point and keep going that Ford or GM, and my family works for General Motors.
