We have a lab-mix and she is a little over a year old. We just acquired her back in October so we don't know anything about her history. She got a "good bill of health" at the vet's office though. However, just recently she has started to shed a lot! It is real bad when you pet her. The hair just falls out. If I barely tug (not hard at all!) on a few strands they all fall out. It mainly happens on her back by her tail. She isn't acting any differently except maybe sleeping more often (but it is icy and cold here so she can't really play outside). We have changed up her dog food quite often so I am wondering if that has anything to do with it. We also tend to give her a bath every 2-½ weeks with an oatmeal-based shampoo. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. (P.S. Please be kind with your words.)

It could be this weird weather, most dogs shed when the weather starts to warm up so the dog will be more comfortable during warmer weather. But our weather is so odd this year that I think it could be because his coat thinks its spring. Alos a lab mix dog will have lots of shedding anyway- brush him a lot it helps.

Is she shedding or losing hair? Dogs either have fur or hair. Fur is constant length and sheds periodically (labs). Haired dogs need to be clipped because their hair continues to grow (poodles and terriers). Dogs shed for numerous reasons. Seasonal changes, anxiety or poor skin condition can add to this. Your dog's shedding is most likely normal. I would recommend brushing your dog 2-3X a week to help collect the hair so it is not all over!
