If the person that did have the dependant living with them for more than six months claims them, the government will catch the fact that two people claimed them, and then it gets interesting. Both have to prove it. The one can can't is never seen again......

The IRS is pretty aggressive with going after single men claiming to be a head of household or claiming dependents that resulted in the taxpayer receiving EIC. A few years ago they mailed out forms to these men asking for proof of support. Needless to say, most of these men didn't get their refunds.

If someone else claims the dependent also, then odds approach 100%. If nobody else claims the dependent, then it's harder to tell.

The IRS had put increased efforts into catching those that cheat in the past two years. Be very careful and be sure that you can afford to get caught.
