Normal vaginal discharge after parturition should be odorless and may be green, dark red-brown or bloody and may persist in small amounts for up to 8 weeks.
Signs of metritis (inflammation of the uterus) are as follows:
* fever
* foul-smelling vaginal discharge
* listlessness
* loss of appetite
* no interest in the puppies
* decreased milk production

RE:
how long after birth will a mother dog have bloody discharge?
She had the puppies 10 days ago and my husband is worried about the fact that she still has a slightly bloody discharge. I know the answer for humans, but not dogs! :) I want to make sure I dont need to take her to the vet. Thank you for your answers.

She may "spot" for about 14 days after giving birth; some dogs can go longer.
You need to worry if the dog is running a fever (anything over 102 is too high); or if the discharge is exceedingly bloody (red blood) and heavy, or if the dicharge is greenish-black and has a very foul smell. These can be indicative of hemorrahge, infection, or of a dead puppy inside the mom -- which can put the dog into shock very quickly.

It varys with every female, it also depends on how many puppies she had due to the bleeding coming from the placental sites. My mini dachshund had 5 puppies 5 weeks ago and her bloody discharge just turned clear about a week ago. If it has a foul smell or if it is a large amount then I would contact your vet. I hope this helps..

It will probably last about another week. It is common for dogs to bleed 2 -3 weeks after pups are born.

Usually around 2 weeks. I would only start to worry after 3.

Average is about 1-2 weeks, but it can last as long as 12 weeks. There isn't much to worry about unless it starts to look yellowish and smell bad. If she starts acting lethargic, take her to the vet.
