Curious about ages of children and if you had dog or kids first. Why did you choose this breed? Thanks

I have a Cockapoo, a Doberman, and a Boston Terrier. Whomever said, in a previous answer, that Bostons are horrible with kids doesn't know what they are talking about. My first dog was a Boston, and I was only 3. Then we started raising them (for 8 years) when I was 10. We had a two-year waiting list for our puppies, and most people had kids. I have 6 kids from 9-years to 22-years old. My kids love all the dogs. They love to snuggle and play with them all.

Why did I choose these breeds? The CockaPoo I picked up out of the middle of the highway and adopted her. My Doberman? I have always liked them, and after having to put our German Shepherd to sleep (elderly and extremely ill), I just couldn't get another Shepherd so soon after. The Boston? Because, as I said, I have had them all my life and they are excellent family pets.

Whatever breed you choose, please research!!! Buy from a reputable breeder. People (including my husband and my dad), questioned my sanity when I said I was buying a Doberman. I bought him from a show-breeder. His father is an international champion. I met both parent-dogs and although I never would have entered the owners property on my own, when she introduced them to me inside her house, they were just big babies!!! Simon, my Doberman, had to endure a houseful of strangers (20 of them), from age 3 months baby, 2 year-old child, up to adults after Hurr. Katrina. The 2-year-old chased him all around and Simon never even looked at him wrong!!! It's all in the bloodlines and careful upbringing. Doberman's have no doggie odor, and are easy to upkeep.

If at all possible, go to a dog show, and talk to breeders/owners there. Most are very willing to give honest advice about their breeds and will even warn you if they feel their breed is not right for children.

My favorite breeds are the Boston, and German Shepherds. I will have more of both in the future.

Yorkies. No kids. Yorkies should be big enough or around big enough kids to not be hurt by the kids. They are small enough not to intimidate kids though. It's not just the breed, it's the individual temperament within the breed you should especially match. Some breeds are more laid back and will take all sorts of tail pulling and all but also require more care and space and dog food bill. You have to consider more than just the kid because the kid and dog will both grow in a short time. Consider the whole environment and the lifestyle of the family, i.e. how much time is spent at home with the dog, allergies, shedding, climate, etc. You certainly don't want a pup improperly socialized that's a "nipper".

I have 3 dogs and 2 Children. My children are 3 1/2 and 5. My dogs are an American Eskimo, 12 yrs old, a Dachshund, 8 yrs old and a Border Collie, 7 months old.

I have always been very fond of the American Eskimo breed, and is why I choose this breed. I had her before husband or children came along. The Dachshund came along when hubby and I were engaged and is a breed he was very fond of. Would not have been a breed I would have picked personally, but he's a wonderful dog and I wouldn't trade him for the world.

As for the Border Collie, we had wanted to bring a puppy into our home that would grow up with our children. Our other 2 dogs were good with them, but not much interested in interacting with them at all. I had a BC mix several years ago and have always loved this intelligent breed. We weighed the pros and cons (a big con being that they are not said to be good with children) and decided a BC would be the breed we would get. We have never regretted that decision. She's a great dog that loves to be with everyone in the family and she plays so well with our children. We've done specific training to work out the herding/nipping instinct and have had good results. We had to make a good commitment to training, which is fun for us in itself, and to make sure she gets metal stimulation as well as good excercise (this breed gets destructive when bored) and we've also decided to persue agility.

Overall, our first two dogs didn't "grow up" with kids, but does well with them all the same, and our recent addition has been great!

I have chihuahuas and have had them for almost 9 years. My kids are 10 and 12. I got them because dh grew up with a chihuahua (who I got to know early in our relationship) and really liked the breed. I became fond of them myself and wanted a little dog, which has become 5 little dogs LOL because we all love the breed so much.

I have a type of bordie collie. (so my husband says) All I know is that she is a herding dog. We got her from a friend as a puppy as a companion for our son. He was 2 years old when we got her. He named her doobie doo. ( he couldnt say scooby at the time) We obviously had kids first. We have four children, and when we got our doobie, they were 10, 7 , 4, and 2. We got her mostly for the kids to grow up with. and for them to have someone to protect them and play with them. We chose doobie also because we were in love with her father. He is a herding dog also, and has a WONDERFUL temperment with our children. my son could pull on him and ride him and do just about anything and he wouldnt ever bite or growl at him. My son and him were best friends, especially since my son would feed him anything he was eating. We also loved the colors on him. Unfortunatly the mother only had three pups in her first litter and so we took the black one. But we love her and she has been a good dog. She actually just had her first litter ten days ago.

German Shepherd Dog/ Labrador retriever for a big breed. So loyal and protective, yet very sweet, and loving. As for the small breeds, American Cocker Spaniel. Maybe King Charles Spaniel too. Probably the best for your standards, pretty adorable things too! Spaniels are probably the best choice if looking for a small dogs. And Labs/GSD for big breeds. Hope this helps! Google for info!!!

I have a shih tzu that i got when my kids were little because i wanted a little dog that didnt shed. But then I got a black lab beagle mix about a year later as well. I think if the dog is raised right that they would be ok with kids regardless of their breed.

I have a Maltese. I do not have any kids (I am 21), but she is very gentile and calm. When I'm sitting or laying down, she has to be right next to me and when i'm walking around, she follows me wherever I go. She is very submissive and most dogs in this breed are. I have actually tried putting my finger in her mouth to see what she would do, but she won't even open her mouth to let my finger in. She gets very excited when she sees new people and will run around in circles until she calms down. She gives lots of kisses too. I think Malteses would be great with kids. She loves playing with the neighborhood kids (they are in 3rd, 5th, and 7th grade).
