E. coli is a bacteria that is normally found in the intestinal tract. It can be transmitted to cause an infection (vomiting/diarrhea) through contact with feces. That's why it's crucial for food service employees to wash hands well, etc. Also, many foods such as lettuce should be washed well... Children can transmit the gems when hands are not clean in daycare or schools as well. I recommend you visit www.webmd.com and type in e.coli in the search field to get a more complete picture of symptoms, treatment, etc. I believe they also have other references listed as well if this doesn't answer your question.

is a type of bacterial gastroenteritis. Most people recover without antibiotics or other specific treatment within 5 to 10 days. Antibiotics should not be used to treat this infection. There is no evidence that antibiotics improve the course of disease, and it is thought that treatment with some antibiotics could lead to kidney complications. Antidiarrheal agents, such as loperamide (Imodium®), should also be avoided.

In some people, the infection can cause a complication called hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a life-threatening condition that is usually treated in an intensive care unit. Blood transfusions and kidney dialysis are often required.

E. coli is an entire family of bacteria, most of which are harmless. A few types cause disease, such as e. coli 0157:H7, and it's because there are so many of them in the family that they have to identify them by number. It's spread by fecal contamination. The main problem with treating it is that using antibiotics increases the chance of hemolytic uremic syndrome, a potentially fatal kidney disease. Treatment is mostly supportive--rest and rehydration.

E coli generally lives in the lower intestines of mammals. Such as dogs, cats, cows, sheep... and people. It can also be found around hot springs. Contaminated water, soil, and food can carry E. Coli to people and make them ill.

E. coli comes from contamination of food products with animal feces. If vegetables are not properly washed or if meat is contaminated with feces and not cooked to 150 degrees. then there can be potential for major illness.

Ecoli is found in the digestive tracts of people and animals. It occurs naturally and all animals and people have it in their tracts. It's a problem when it gets into our drinking water, our food supply, etc. and we eat or drink it. We get way too much in our system and our body goes into overdrive to get it out. That's when you start with the excessive vomiting, excessive diarreha, that causes severe dehydration, the ecoli runs rampant in our body and you could end up dying if it cannot get under control.
