Hydrocarbon and Carbon monoxide are just two gasses a good technician needs the other gas readings for Carbon dioxide and Nitrus oxide to best tell you what is causing the problem. I would not rule out a worn cat converter. Most 1992 15 year old cars are nearing the end of the normal service lifetime. If it costs $2,000 to just repair the emissions equiptment would that be money well spent? Or like many owners you have new transmission and tires put on last summer and just can't let go.

do a tune up and ask the smog technician if your oxygen sensor(s) is bad, also ask about the catalytic converter, the egr valve, do an oil change, and make sure your engine is hot when you take it to smog. if these don't help, i'm sure you can get a diagnosis done at a smog and repair shop. aftermarket mufflers shouldn't be a problem.
the technician should have told you everything you need to do.

i own a repair shop, and it may have something to do with it,,but id say the most of it may be a bad sensor on it,,causing this to happen,,id have it checked,,its probably nothing real serious,,but it will have to repaired for it to pass, have it scanned to see if it has any bad sensors on it,,auto zone will do this for free, and you,ll have a better idea of how to fix it,,good luck i hope this help,s.
