Irish places on 3rd ave. 15 minute walk to union square (everything you need it there). 29th and 1st is not the best area, but it is still safe. Go to East on 26th and 3rd to get conveyor belt sushi

FYI 29th betwenn 1st and 2nd ain't Murray Hill. Murray Hill is a little farther North and West. You are in Kip's Bay.

That said, there are a lot of restaurants and bars on Third Avenue from around 34th all the down to the Village, of every kind imaginable. You've got a C town on 2nd and 29th the better grocery stores are on Third -- Food Emporium and Gristedes at 31st and D'Agostino's at 26th. Also, I would have to say that 2nd below 29th is a little dodgy and 1st is also -- right near Bellevue, you are better off going to the North on Second for bars and restaurants. The Waterfront Ale House on 2nd and 30th is a good neighborhod place -- really good food not too expensive.

Also, you have Little India on Lex. between 29th and 25th dozens of India Restaurants and Spice Stores. The Rodeo Bar 3rd and 27th has free live music seven days a week.

There are two great Restaurants on E27th between Park and Lex I Trulli (Italian expensive) and Blue Smoke (BBQ and live Jazz downstairs)
