I can't wait to get my first tattoo... My only problem is the design. I want it to symbolize my spirituality. It should have a star of David, hamsa hand, ankh and eye of horus. and thats just to start. I'm thinking that they should be in a circle and they should be interlocked by either some intricate celtic knot or a snake or tribal design. But i don't know an artist and am getting it done in a town that i visit on the weekends once a month three hours away so its hard to get into a parlor to talk to a tattoo artist about it... Tell me what ya think! I'm very open to suggestions.

I don't give a **** if you like the idea or not. This tattoo means a lot to me. And yes, I am working on the design so that I like it when I get old. And I couldn't give a **** if you think it'll make me look skanky. I don't know you and I don't want to have sex with you so I DONT CARE

Also, I have researched this. I know what to look for in an artist, in a shop, and how to take care of it. I just need to figure out how to design the tattoo.

*sigh* i've wanted this for years. and it doesn't matter if i change, then it represents the way i am now. im not tattooing a boyfriends name, i'm tattooing my spiritual beliefs of the time and that is something special that stays with you your whole life.

Ugh, don't do it. Tattoos on girls are skanky.

Additional:

Sweetie, if you don't want people's opinions, don't ask questions. Free world and all that.
Be careful answering her questions, she sent me a email full of F this and F that.
Wow. Calm down and find peace and happiness. YIKES

First of all, wait a year until you do it. Think a lot about it, maybe it draw it on your skin and if after a year (or a long time) you still LOVE it, then get a tattoo.

Secondly, if you're doing a tattoo that'll represent your spirituality you have to be a 100% sure, you're devoted to your religion and aren't going to change your mind about it. Many people I've know have tattooed catholic stuff and then just realise they don't believe, or see symbols as dogmatic stuff. Also, unless your spirituality contains all of what you've mention above, you may want to consider sticking with something pure, jewish or muslim, for example, cause if you're, for example, jewish getting something celtic isn't really supporting your strong spirituality, you know?

You may also want to consider something a little more simple, some tattos with a lot of things in them end up looking tacky. You have to consider that ink fades just a bit, and that skin isn't always like it is now, it'll sretch and fall, and your tattoo won't look very nice then.

Just think a lot about it, despite what anyone here, or somewhere else tells you cause at the end of the day the one who'll have to live with the tattoo and see it everyday will be you. Maybe look for inspiration online, look for tattoos in google or yahoo, and just have a look to a few design that'll help you.
Good luck ;)!

Pd: Don't just get your tattoo anywhere! Please find out about the parlor's health things, and if the needles used are a 100% quirurjical and clean etc,. You can get hepatitis and many toher stuff like AIDS if you're not careful, also take an allergy test, a friend was going to get a tattoo and it turns out she was allergic to the ink used.

Who ever disrespects any one with a tattoo on this page is just scared of tattoos.

1.) Very important that it has personal meaning.
2.) Important that you help create the tattoo.

you will always love it and no one will have the same tattoo as you, if you where to pick one from a wall.

Next question what city do you live in? so I can tell you where to go.

Make sure you go into the tattoo shop and ask to see some of the artists work. Feel free to ask there advise and don't be discourage if you need to schedule an appt and come back.
Ave cost is $100 per Hr for a good artist. Remember this is going to be on you forever. any cheaper and you are getting what you paid for. Ask the artist how he got into tattooing and how long they have been doing it 10 year+ is ok..

If you have any friends that can draw a picture of what you want the tattoo artist can use that. It sounds very interesting, and if done correctly should turn out to be a beautiful tattoo. I agree it would look good to have them interlocked, or linked somehow. I like the tribal design. I have 4 tattoo's and all of them have some type of tribal design around them. Since I can't really help you with getting your design started, I'd like to offer some other tips. Be sure you get clear instructions on how to care for your new tattoo before you leave the shop. Be sure that the artist opens the needles from the wrapping in your presence. Don't just assume everything is sterile. Be aware that some people develop an allergic reaction to the color red. Ask to see pics of the artists previous work, if you haven't seen other tattoo's he or she has done. And I wish you much luck. I love mine, and you'll love yours.

I think it is very important to sit down with your artist and talk with them and have them sketch out your idea.

You want so many different elements in your tattoo that it is very easy that in the wrong hands it could be horrible! Remember your tattoo is something that you are going to have for the rest of your life. You have to be really careful and make sure that you end up with what you want.

It is nothing to rush into especially if it is something that you want to do for a spiritual reason. Make sure that you get the right artist, and if the one in the next town over is not the right artist for you, look for another one. The internet has many great resources to find tattoo artists.

Also, make sure you look at your artists other work, is his/her style appealing to you. If not keep looking. I could actually kind of visualize your tattoo, but the way I see it and the way you see it, might be completely different. This is why you have to have it sketched out first to make sure that it turns out the way you want it.

Remember your tattoo is forever, and while you may be able to get it touched up, covered up or lasered off in the future, why go through that hassle? Get it done right the first time.

Good luck to you!

*edit*
If you have a friend who can draw you can also do this with them. Sketching it out though is the only thing that will help you at this point. I have the same problem as you do as I have a design idea and I cannot draw it out. I have to get an artist friend of mine to draw it for me. I already know who I want to do it, it's just a matter of placement and it looking the way I imagine it.

Try looking around the town you are in for a tattooist. Not knowing where you are it's hard to recamond someone. It sounds like a very nice tattoo. Don't let anyone judge you they are just closed minded people with no life! What I can suggest is that you check out this website and maybe someone in there has more of a clue as to a tattooist in the area you want.
Hope this helps and happy tattooing!

ah - you must have gotten many comments re: whether to get a tattoo or not....not what she asked people! I actually created mine...not as many factors working into it as your plans but I did this....if you have any friends that can draw...let them know your ideas and see if they can sketch something up for you. Also - there are some tattoo artists out there that are AMAZING artists....you would prob be able to bring your idea in and they can create something for you. I found that by talking to quite a few artists re: my tattoo idea, I was able to get an even clearer idea as to what I wanted for my tattoo as well as which artist I wanted to go to. I also waited on my decision for a year to make sure that I was still totally in love with my creation. I was and I'm getting in in 2 weeks.

I know you mentioned that it's difficult to get to - but at the same time...you're wearing this for life....you want to make sure that it's perfect! Best of luck to you...

Sounds like an awesome idea to me. You have an idea of what you want and know that it means something to you.

I highly suggest you take your idea to a skilled artist and have them help you draw out something custom and ask for some variations of it. Even if you don't' know one, start looking. No harm in going to a shop and chatting with the artist for a bit, you'll just have to put forth effort in talking to one. Time shouldn't be an issues, if you want the tattoo, you'll make time for it. I'm sure someone will be willing to help you out and once you get the drawing done, figure out where you want it and get it done!

Happy tattooing and good luck with your picture.

My boyfriend just got his first tattoo. He said alot of inspiration can just come from waiting in the waiting section. Although he had an appointment, he had to wait about thirty minutes. If the situation is the same, you may have more time than you think to talk to an artist or other people waiting.
p.s. put the ankh and eye or horus across from each other if you do them all in a circle. That would look cool because connecting them with something else in the middle might look nifty.

Find several tatoo's that you like and print them out. Your tattoo arist will be able design one for you that will include all three.
Call the artist directly and ask if they have an email address you can send photos too and see if he can email you a drawing back for your approval. He may charge you extra for his time
