I have a Geram Shepherd which I love very much. I have had him since he was a pup 7 years ago. He has always been a very good dog, very loyal and VERY obedient. However over the past few months he has gotten out of control. He acts nervous all the time and his energy level has shot through the roof. I have put flea medicine on him religiously since he was a pup but now he acts like I am killing him. I have to use force in everything I do with him. He is not aggressive just completely obstinate. I am at the end of my rope. I could understand if he was a pup but good grief he is 7 and never acted like this before. I am getting to the point that I do not even want to be around him. I know that sounds bad but believe me when I say everything I do with him or to him is a chore. I don't understand what his problem is. He has been to the vet and recieved a clear bill of health. I am contemplating putting him on medication because I cannot take this.

He has been to the vet. He goes to the vet regularly. In fact he was just at the vet a week ago. Did you not see in my post where I said the vet gave him a clear bill of health? Besides it is obvious that this is not a physical condition but a mental one.

Vets are not counselors. This dog is completely healthy. He goes to a very good vet and yes I told the vet of his behavior but they do not know.

I agree with these guys. Your vet should do a more thorough check-up if your dog's behaviour has suddenly changed like this.
Also, has your dog been through some kind of recent trauma that maybe you don't know about?
I don't know if it applies or not, but all dogs go through a "tweens" stage, and I think 7 seems a little odd for that, but
maybe you could see if that is the problem.

It may be something mentally, you should get a second opinion from a vet, and put him on meds if you cant take it anymore, but just remeber, if he has NEVER acted like this, then its NOT his fault, please dont give up on him! i know its hard, but just think about it this way to make it easier,

Feed him.
Water him.
(Try)Playing with him.
Give him a bone.
Pat him on the head.
Let him out to "go"
Take him on a 5 min walk (if he tolorates it)
Give him a kiss good night.

Do that everyday and dont think of it as a chore, and it shouldnt be SO over whelming. Like i said, Its NOT his fault, and you might not be able to help him, so just do that every day, and you will give him a good rest of his (and yours) life!

And if putting flea medicine is too much for you to do, then buy him a flea collar. And when you give him his bath, sponge bathe him so he wont freak out, and dont use baby wipes for a through cleaning. Hope this helps :o)!!

I can help alot, so please e-mail me if needed!

If your vet said everything is fine - run to another vet. A behavior change like that means something is wrong.

Also, could someone been abusing him? Who else is your dog around and how does he act with them?

Do not give up on him. He is counting on you to help him even though he can not tell you what is wrong.

awww german shepherd aren't they fun. most of my shepherds have gone through this at this age. i happen to have a 7 year old shepherd mix that all of a sudden has started tearing up things and pooping in the house. she has a clean bill from the vet also. i have just started puppy training again. i treat her as her actions dictate. she's crated again when we're not home and at night. and after a few weeks of this she's back to her old self. as for the energy level, are you taking your dog on regular walks? good, long strenous walks usually will make a dog , well dog tired, sorry bout that, lol. but it will and might help with the energy level. as for the rest, retrain. some dog's especially ones that have become quite complacent with their lives will try to test us time and time again. just start over. if he knows the rules a refresher shouldn't take too long. good luck. and don't hold affection from your dog, it's only going to make the dog act out more.

It could have to do with his age. Dogs can get something similar to Alzheimer's where their mind is affected and they do not remember things, places, people. I would have another talk with your vet or a new vet. It could aslo be something like a brain tumor. Check out this link here for info on "doggy Alzheinmers".
