My roomate and i can't even leave the room to go to the bathroom or the puppy will be on top of the coffee table chewing and eating anything in sight. She has knocked over numerous drinks and tried to eat anything that she thinks could be food. I don't want her to get sick, hurt herself, or destroy something I need. I have been working with her on the off comand, but that seems to be going nowhere. What can I do??

Congrats on your pup! I have a 7 month old too. What I have found with my pup that works well is an empty soda can. Put some pennies in it and tape it shut. When you catch your doggie doing something she shouldn't, shake the can or toss the can on the floor next to her. The noise will startle her and she'll forget what she was interested in. Doing this a few times will stop the unwanted behavior.

Make sure your pup has plenty of other things to do and that you play with her on a regular basis. Play helps build your relationship with your pup and she will learn to trust you and listen to you. This bond will be the backbone of her behavior. My pup is so bonded with me, I never have to use the can to scold her anymore. When she gets into trouble, I give her a firm NO! and she slinks down looking at me like "I am soooo sorry Mommy! I didn't want to make you mad at me!" All dogs aim to please their humans, provided you have the right bond with them.

And always be consistent. If you can't watch your pup, put her in a crate or another room where there is nothing to get her in trouble. They are curious and will get into things... if you can't watch her, you need to keep her safe.

A) your dogs a puppy if you don't teach it what not to do it will keep on 'counter surfing' on the coffee table- theres probably much more exciting stuff on the table!

- take thestuff of the table ! It will be less intresting for the dog

- you can fill a tin can with pennies etctape lid shut- put one or two items on the table if the dog goes to eat or jump on the table etc shake the can - don't let the dog see the can- the noise usualy is not taken plesantly & afterthat occurs a few times the dog will leavethe table alone - souse trapsalso can work - but some are rigged to snap to tightly & can hurt the dog -- also can fill Newly biught spray bottle w/ water & spray the dog if it goes to the table

I agree with the person who suggested a rawhide treat. It will keep him busy and happy. But the bad thing is he could very quickly get used to that and expect a treat every time he goes outside. Or he will do what my grandmas dog does and not go for the treat anymore because he knows he will be stuck out there. This might be a drastic suggestion. But maybe you should get him a playmate. Another dog perhaps? Whatever you do, don't start yelling at him, or even telling him "no" when he starts to whine, as hard as it may be. Because this is giving him what he wants essentially, attention. And it will probably only make him whine more, just to get a reaction from you. Besides, being outside is good for him. He will learn to adapt. At least for your sake, I hope so. But if all else fails, I think crate training, like the other girl suggested, might be your best bet. That is actually a really good idea, and might work best. Well....... Good luck.

You can try tghis, get a spray bottle or a water gun, fill with water and when your puppy is on the table squirt the water right on the nose of your puppy, You can also try to make something with a can or oother object that will enable to you close both ends you can put dry macroni rice for dry beans in it,,,when yoy shake it makes a strange noise and this will scare you puppy, she will associate the noise or the water with in anapporaite action...good luck

Puppies will be puppies and if you leave something tempting they will try for it. A strong NO when you catch him won't hurt. Remember to be consistent letting him know about it every time. Be sure to praise him if he backs away from the coffee table after telling him NO. Lots of exercise for your pup will help also. Be patient and consistent. Enjoy your pup!

Sounds like normal puppy behavior unfortunately. Coffee tables just aren't high enough off the ground! Try putting one of those plastic office chair mats upside down on the coffee table so that the pointy plastic bits that hold the carpet stick up. That should make it too uncomfortable to rest her paws on.

you're going to have to stop putting things on the coffee table until she can learn better. when it's quiet and you have the time, and you need to make the time. put something that will appeal to her on the coffee table. keep her on a leash. when she goes for it, pull back on the leash, tell her off, in a firm voice and make her sit. as soon as she moves out of sit tell her sit again in the same firm voice. keep repeating this as many times as it takes. when she does notice something and doesn't go after it praise her. be consistant and patient. if you tell her no one minute and turn your back and allow her to get something, she'll just learn to wait for you to not notice and will try this time and time again. don't set her up to fail. don't yell or get angry. just be firm. enroll her in a training class that will give you the time and knowledge on how to work with her. the class will let you bond, build her confidence and teach her you are to be respected and listened to. she is a great age for this. if you can't be directly observing her the coffee table needs to be empty or she needs to be in her crate. good luck.

i don't reccomend the water spray. for one my dog would just play with it and do things to get it sprayed at her. plus you need to teach her to listen to you in general and not just this one thing. again good luck.

There are a few real keys to dog training, whether you are trying to train your dog to come when called, sit, stop barking or any other behavior. Understanding their importance is critical to achieving rapid results that are long lasting and help develop the bond between you and your dog. Learn more http://OnlineDogTraining.enle.info/?17E8

The first is simple; you must win your dogs mind. If you don’t achieve this first then you will be struggling the all the way. When I talk about winning your dogs mind what I really mean is that your dog looks to you for all the decisions. Before you do anything else watch one of the amazing video sites that show you the 5 Golden rules to establishing yourself as the pack leader. If you aren’t putting these in place then you are setting yourself up to fail. Just at the crucial point where you really want your dog to listen they will go and do their own thing. For sure your dog may play ball occasionally or even most of the time, you may even have a dog that is obedient 99% of the time, however if you want a dog who always listens to you and does as you ask then you need to win your dogs mind.

The second key to success is to motivate your dog. It is really important that you discover what it is that your dog enjoys both in terms of exercise and play but also in terms of a reward. If you can make the experience enjoyable then you will both achieve more and look forward to training.

Some dogs love to fetch, others love agility, and other dogs simply love obedience training, or swimming out into water and retrieve. At least to start with find out what your dogs love is and help them develop this, what I am saying is work with your dog. The other point to recognize is to make training enjoyable reward your dog.
