I've asked my eye doctor if I should be concerned that one or both of my eyes won't open when I wake up. This happens two or three times a week. Sometimes it happens five or days in a row and then won't happen for a week or so. When both eyes won't open it is very agravating. But both eyes, or just the one that is still closed, are open after about five minutes.
Does anyone else experiance this? What is it?

I'm sorry, I did not state that they are not matted or swollen. They simply do not open.

I don't know but that's no good. So was your eye doctor not worried by this? If not I would go to your med. doctor and bring it up to him.

When I was a young boy, age 8, frequently, I couldn't open my eyes in when awaking. I would force one lid open, so I knew I hadn't gone blind, but had to wait it out until the spasm or whatever was preventing my eyelids from opening, would relax. I often went back to sleep, hoping that when I awakened again, my lids would work. No one seemed to be too worried about this condition, and it eventually went away, and has never returned. I am now 71, and in good health. I did hear that I could have had hysterical paralysis of the eyelids, and would outgrow it. I also was fearful of many things. My mother seemed to be overly concerned about me, and worried a lot about my whereabouts, etc. This hyper-state was understood much later in my life, when the story was revealed. When I was 6 years old, a very good friend of the family, and my father's fellow teacher's daughter was brutally murdered in L.A. just a few blocks from our home. It was referred as the Strobel murder case, when her playmate's grandfather invited her into his home to wait for her playmate, and sexually attacked her, mutilated her body, and put it into the backyard incinerator. He was eventually executed. This happened in the 1950's. I never knew about this growing up, and it was never mentioned. http://articles.latimes.com/2004/aug/29/local/me-then29
A movie was made from this horrible tragedy. I went to an art class with their son. I played with the little girl who was murdered often. Behavior explained.

no, i don't experience this but sometimes, eye infections, or use of certain eye drops cause the eyes to get kind of gunky and they kind of get glued shut. do you have any secretions from your eyes? are they crustry around the lashes? if you've ruled out an infection or any of the above, you really ought to be examined so that you can at least rule out any neurological causes.

good luck to you.
