There are several links below to great pages of quilting instructions. Fons & Porter's website has some free instruction pages for the basics of quilting. Their magazine, Fons & Porter's Love of Quilting, is well worth the subscription price. They also have several books out. Quilter's Cache has over 1300 free block patterns with easy to follow, illustrated instructions. She has a few quilting lesson pages, too. Click the drop down menu that says "Where do you want to go today?"
I'd also recommend you buy a couple of books to get you started. My favorite beginner book is "Start Quilting with Alex Anderson," although I've heard good things about Eleanor Burns' book "It's El-ementary." If you want to spend a little more, her book "Still Stripping after 25 Years" is an excellent beginner book, with fantastic step-by-step illustrations. You should get one good reference book as well. The two most highly recommended are Fons & Porter's "Quilter's Complete Guide" and "The Quilter's Ultimate Visual Guide" by various authors.
Obviously, the best way to learn to quilt is to have someone teach you. Ask your local quilt shops if they have beginner classes. If there's a local community college, they might have adult education classes. Contact your local quilt guild and see if anyone is interested in helping you.
I also recommend you look into the Yahoo Groups. There are many groups geared toward quilting, and I'm sure you can find one that suits your needs. People are happy to answer questions, and always welcome of new people.
