I have a 7 year old Staffy and he has a hell of a time with itch! I have tried everything from this special oil made from sea cucumbers to zinc to bicarb... Nothing seems to help him?? I have a feeling that since he had it from such a young age (he was dumped and when we found him he was riddled with it) maybe he is just itching as force of habit? And has anyone heard anything good about Chickweed gel for Staff itch?

Oh, I forgot to add, when we took him to the vet, they said that it would have been better had he had mange! That would have been fixable. Vets have basically just said 'Cordizone, Cordizone, Cordizone!!'. I refuse to use this with him though as he is getting older and the last thing he needs is to have liver failure too! Oh well.

Have you had the vet check him for demodex mange? All dogs have the mites living in their skin and alot of time dumpouts have outbreaks of it (from stress). I don't know if it would last 7 years, but anything could help. BTW, it's not contagious. All our dogs had it (they were all dumpouts).

This is a breed that commonly has skin problems. Itchyness and allergies are a problem for many of them.
Make sure your dog food has no corn wheat or soy in it and that the preservatives are natural ones. SOmething with only one meat source would also be good. Sometimes the allery can be to a meat used in the food.
They make oils you can put over the food to help with dryness but they really only help if the dog has dry skin.
I have a dobe who itched and we ended up with a cream we used on him once per day on his tummy for the itching and feeding a very high quality dog food. He still had it to some degree but it was better on the better dog food.

I have a dog with dry skin. I thought he had fleas, so I washed him in flea soap which only dried him out more. I asked my vet what I could possibly do? My daughter uses fish oil capsules for her dry skin-could my dog? Every other day I break open a fish oil capsule and sprinkle it on his food. His skin has cleared up.
