I've never been afraid of my dogs, and have owned English Mastiffs to Chihuahuas. I do respect them, I understand they are dogs, and don't think or react like people do. It is important to understand that, and to train your dog. If you are thinking about getting a dog, start by learning as much as you can, and choosing your dog very carefully. Many breeds would make good companions for someone who is nervous around most dogs, but getting one on impulse would not be smart! If you don't want a dog, but want to get over your fear a little more, ask some friends with nice friendly dogs to help.
If your nervousness doesn't affect you much, and you don't want a dog, don't worry about it! Plenty of people don't like dogs for many reasons, so you are by no means alone! Besides, a healthy respect for anything that could cause you harm is a good thing, and I have gotten nervous around other peoples dogs plenty of times!

i do not have a dog. But i work with dogs every day. If you are afraid of your dog you should talk to your vet, or talk to an obedience trainer. They are good at reading animals, and they might be able to help you get your bond back. If you are asking this question for yourself.
edit: If you don't have a dog, but you are afraid of other dogs, but you still want a dog. Try getting a small dog as a puppy. That way it will grow up with you, and since it is small you won't feel as intimidated by it. I have had fears of rottweilers, so i know i won't be able to own a rottweiler for a long time until i COMPLETELY over come this fear because dogs can sense fear. ( I want you to know that I'm not saying rottweilers are bad dogs, i have met so many nice ones, but i was bit once by a rottie, and my mom beat it into my head since i was younger that they were bad. I know it is all in my head and i am working on it. )

not of my own dog. i have had her for 7 years and we have trained together. taken road trips, i know her moods and she's very closely bonded with me. she was taught, (by me in a training class) to respect me and listen to me. not that she doesn't have her moments. but i can stop her in a dead run after a rabbit and know she'll come back. but i am not afraid of dogs in general, and i researched my dog's breeds and what it took to be a good pet owner. it's good that you know you're afraid. some people just are, and try not to put yourself in a situation with an unknown dog. they know this. same way cats flock to my husband because he doesn't like them. if you are on here because you're thinking of getting a dog. you need to get a puppy. something that will not frighten you. size won't matter because you'll raise the dog. and you need to research the breed or breed mixes that you are thinking about and all it takes to be a good dog owner. don't be afraid to ask for help before commiting to one then finding out you don't really want to commit what it takes to raise a good dog.

No. Not ever. Mine are all well trained and I do my best to read their body language. I wouldn't take on a dog that I was afraid of.
I have been afraid of one dog in my life. It was a dangerous menace, it wasn't mine, and it belonged to an irresponsible neighbor.

Nope. I have owned Shih Tzus and Rotties, and probably every version of mutt in between! I have never been afraid of any of them! It may be because I taught them all from the beginning that I was the Alpha and they understood and respected that.

I could never be afraid of my dog. We are best friends and neither of us would even think of hurting the other. I would trust her with my life.

Me and my dog adore each other but she is very protective of her food and bones and when she's sleeping. She lets me know if i'm invading her territory with a warning growl and snarl and that kind of scares me but it showed me to stay away. They all need their own space.

no way. besides, she is so tiny and cute. after all, there are a gazillion stray dogs here in Greece, so being afraid of dogs would pose a problem!
