Since 1830 men of any nationality are permitted to join the legion.
Legionnaires have the option of leaving their old identities behind when they enter basic training in Marseilles.

Ok I didn't read all of this because it was quite long but I think I know where you're getting at. It started back when America was becoming a country on its own. Back when we had to fight off the British and the French helped the Americans, but after so long they retreated. The French wanted to help the Americans because they wanted land in the Americas... (Quebec, Montreal) and had the Louisiana purchase but the Americans bought it from them. I think it would be really cool if it were French speaking there but anyways. So because they left the Americans even though they did help the Americans called them cowards. That's pretty much it.
