In the "manic stage", in ability to sleep, outrageous thoughts, or actions. You might do really irrational things, like spend 10,000 in one day, when you have only 100. in the bank. Believe that you have great ideas, that make no sense to anyone else, endless energy, and thoughts(like your mind is spinning). Eventually crashing to a depressed state, Bi-polar people can be extremely intelligent, and during "manic", stage very creative. Vincent Van Gogh was most likely to have suffered from Bi-polar, during his "manic" stages, he would paint non stop for days, when he wore himself out , he would be hospitalized for depression, he eventually shot himself in the head, and did ed 3 days later. They did not have Lithium in the late 1800's, which is the most common drug to stablize mood swings. Also for more info, look up actress Patty Duke, she suffered from Bi-polar for years, before being diagnosed.

In order to diagnose someone as bi-polar they need to present with manic and depressive states. But there are different levels of bi-polar (not just manic disorder). Check out the website for more info on this.

Extreme manic state. This is when you are on a high and really productive to the point of obsession and then you crash. That is when the depression sets in.
