Ooo, I used to be the same way.

I would need to take my dog outside at night, and at the slightest noise, I would jump because I was afraid someone was watching me. It took a lot of resasurrance by my parents for me to calm down about it.

Talk to them about it, tell him it is fine and they shouldn't worry about it. Just send up some lights around the house during the night.

Let the 12 year old leave a light or get a night light just for a while. Actually I wouldn't worry so much some of us adults are still sometimes afraid of the dark.

Leave a night light on in her room at night until she gets over what is scaring her! Does she talk to you about what is scaring her? Listen to her, and see what the problem stems from. She may see things that frighten her, and she is afraid to tell you about it, or she may be going through a phase that she imagines things that are not there. The only way you can find out is by calmly discussing it with her and see what she has to say! I have seem things myself that would scare any adult! It may only be her imagination though. Good luck!

I didn't make a big deal of it, I just put a night light in the hallway and let my son leave his door open. He worked it out on his own. Maybe your kid has a more severe case and it's disrupting your household, and then maybe you need some outside help. But I remember going through it when I was a kid, and I think I outgrew it by the time I was 30 or so ;>)

First of you have to find out what caused it in the first place. Sounds like something happened to cause the fright. In the mean time use a night light in the room and work with the kid on why they are scared.

It's impossible. They'll eventually get over it. Just don't give them a reason to be afraid. Don't jump out of the dark at them. Don't tell them scary staories about the dark. It's mostly the fear of the unknown.

Get a dog or cat to sleep in the room with her. Have her share a room. Put on the hallway light and leave her door open.

get a night light or leave the door open a crack with the light on in the hallway. If that don't work then just give it time and it should pass.
