It is not a 289. It is a 281 Cubic inch engine. I own a '97 4.6 Mustang GT convertible with a few performance mods. It may seem like a small engine in size, but it runs like an old big block!
P.S. The old 289 would be about 4.7 or 4.8 liter.

When motors were beginning to be described in liters, the 289 was referred to as being 4.7L. 4.6 Liters converts closest to 281 cubic inches so they are not too far from being the same size. As far as the old design of the 289, the new 4.6L engine was not based off the original 289 design.
Cheers!

a 5.0 is a 302 and a 4.6 has to be right around a 289 or a tad more.

It's technically 283 CID. A Ford 5.0L is considered to be about 307 CID and a 5.8L Ford runs in at 356 CID. So they are advertised by Ford as 4.6L is a 283, 5.0L is a 302 and the 5.8 is a 360.
