Does anybody know what format that you should burn a video onto a cd so it can be read by a portable DVD player with VCD function? How long can the video be on a normal CD-R?

Most burning programs will have a VCD mode. The video format is MPEG-1 (mpg) and will be converted in a special VCD file format.

Typically you will need to store a 1.5-2.0 hour movie on 2 CD's. If you tried to store it on one CD-R, then it would be a really short movie or really crappy video/audio quality.

DVD is the way to go.
