I let my American Eskimo run around outside today and when she came in her claws were bleeding. They look as if she wore them down just from running. I keep them trim as far as they can go without hitting the nerve so how did this happen? She doesn't act like it's hurts, but I want to know what I can use as a disinfectant?

If they're still bleeding, try a styptic pencil to clot the blood. It may be slightly painful to the dog but it will stop the bleeding (your vet may use styptic powder or a silver nitrate stick to do the same).

Once it's stopped bleeding, simple soap and water to keep the nails clean and a 3x antibiotic if you're concerned about infection. Otherwise, leave the nails alone. They should be fine.

If the nails are not currently bleeding then I would leave them alone. An ointment will not help the nails anyway.

to stop any bleeding on the nails, you can use baking soda, it will clot up like the quickstop groomers use. its not much of a chance of infections, dogs get quicked alot. if it would make you feel more comfortable, peroxide will do, or a&d ointment (for diper rash)

I always used Neosporin or any other over-the-counter antibiotic ointment when my dog used to get hot spots and other skin irritations or cuts. It can't hurt, but sometimes they do try to lick it off.

hydrogen peroxide is a good disinfectant. tripple anibiotic ointment or bacitracin will keep it from getting infected but you will have to put socks on her feet to keep her from licking it off.

I just put Vaseline on my dogs paws, and it seems to work. I would keep him/her on wood floors until it' s all soaked in though.
