If i were you before i dye i would get temporary dye, the colors i would choose 4 a guy would be a really really deep dark purple where it is almost black, then add dark dark dark blue on the tips. and maybe some cherry-black highlights!

Dye it a really dark blue so it looks almost black but with a blueish tint.
