Given the frequency of fundamentalist christians telling people they're "going to hell," there are only two possible explanations:
1. They want that person to clean up their act so they *can* join them in heaven...
2. They don't like that person, and will be happy to see them go to hell.
Next time one of 'em tells you you're going to hell for something they think is wrong, ask them which one of the two above is the reason :)
They're both superstitious myths anyway, no evidence of any kind that they're real...so somebody telling me I'm going to hell just makes me laugh at their intellectual weakness and their absolute fear of a magic sky-fairy who promises to punish them for eternity if they don't do *exactly* what he wants them to do. It's really quite funny when you think about it :)
Peace.
Oh, and Christy -- don't worry, it's not "scary" for us unbelievers if you tell us we're going to hell. We know there's no such place -- it makes us laugh, it doesn't scare us. But I do appreciate the kindness behind your thoughts! :)

Do you tell a person there's no heaven or hell, to make them stop worrying about it for the rest of their lives and threaten others with eternal torture?

The people who tell me to go to hell are the last people I'd want to go to heaven with.

Not in so many words.
What makes people want to go to Heaven--beside the Holy Spirit working in their hearts--is a believer, who lets Christ shine through them, showing God's love to people who don't know Him. All mankind deserves hell, according to the bible (Romans 6), although hell was not created for mankind, but for 'the devil and his angels' (Jude). By telling someone (if the conversation goes that way) the salvation Christ brings after telling them their need for Him, you may lead him to Christ, or you may plant a seed...or they may not want anything to do with Him or you.
But, if you simply tell someone they specifically are going to hell, you are judging (condemning) them, when you are not in a position to do so. Telling someone that people--in general--are going to hell if they have not made provision for their sin (through Christ alone) is truth. Telling a specific person they're going to hell, when you cannot see their heart--and God alone is the judge--is wrong.

I do not go around telling people to go to hell. Why would a person do that?

You tell a person they are going to hell, because you were told that to keep you in line. Why not do the right thing, because it is the right thing to do? If we all lived that way, we will not have to be so concerned about god. All God wants is that we care for each other. The rest is put in to confuse you.

Tell them whatever they need to hear.
My favorites are:
Why are you out of the kitchen?
Where you born stupid?
I bet your parents are really proud now!
Just look at you! You are a mess!
Wow! You really shouldn't go out today. You look horrible.
No you cannot go inside. Stay in the car!
And my all time favorite:
For just $9.95, I will make a personal prayer to Jesus on your behalf. I will ask that he saves your soul. If you don't pay me $9.95 then, your going to hell with all the other nonbelievers.

They tell them they are going to hell to put fear in you
then you will believe in heaven which I don't think that
is right to do teach love and people will still follow
but to teach fear is not right

I wouldn't want to be in Heaven with people who believe I should be in Hell if I died right now.
