I have wanted to get a tattoo somehow associated with a place I've always loved for a little over a year now. I recently drew one that incorporates all the elements of previous ideas together. That was a few weeks ago, and I make sure to look at it every chance I get to make sure I still like it. I've tweaked a few minor details, but for the most part, I still really like it. I know a few weeks isn't that long of a time, but does it sound I'm at leats on the right track for getting a tattoo I really like?

Its sounds like you are, but you can't keep changing the minor details. If you look at it and every week you see something you'd like to change then you probably can't get that tattooed on you.
Keep looking at it and if at any point you start to dislike something, stop and think about it being on your skin and that you don't have the ability to change it. Just don't rush yourself and I'm glad you have something meaningful and personal for your tattoo.

I think so - you are putting yourself into the tattoo and incorporating something that you love and that you know you'll always love. Therefore, the tattoo will have actual meaning to you and won't just be a random design that you have on your body. I would just make sure that you do your homework about your artist and so forth re: artistic ability, safety, etc. Best of luck to you!

Best way to go is go to the shop. Show the artist your ideas, and have them suggest and draw up what they invision what you are trying to portray.
There is the possibility something you have created may not convert well in a tattoo where the tattoo artist could suggest what to alter to make it work.
Best advice tho is just that, go into the shop and tell them your ideas and let them guide you.

all of these answers are good, however all are just opinions. so i will offer mine. every artist will depict your idea in a different way based on the "style" of art he/she specializes in. if you are trying to create a tattoo from an "idea" you need to really research into the style you would like the overall tattoo to be depicted in. then based on this research, find an artist that specializes in just that. and please, when you comission an artist to do a custom piece, do not haggle with them about the price. we are professionals. what else can you pay a relatively small price for, and have for the rest of your life?

Sounds like your doing it the right way, just remember once u get ink your usually hooked and will want to get more. Do you know who your going to have do the work? If not look around or ask your friends who have tattoos where they went. Find someone your comfortable with have him or her draw up a stencil for you. GOOD LUCK

You ARE on the right track.
I drew up a tattoo 6 years ago and haven't gotten it yet and look at it almost everyday.
I am finally ready, I will be getting it in April for my 21st birthday in memory of my father.

I think tattoos have to be something meaningful or else there's no point in getting them. Just make sure you're not getting a tattoo just to get one. And in my opinion, I wouldn't get one too big. B/c as you age they tend to stretch out and look destorted.
