A laptop, or a desktop computer, can be taken as an education expense only if the school requires that you purchase the laptop FROM THE SCHOOL as a condition of enrollment. So no, not likely.

As to the donation to Toys for Tots, if you itemize you can take it, but if you get audited, they might disallow it unless you can show some proof like a cancelled check.

If the school requires you to purchase a laptop, then the answer is yes. If it was purchased for your convenience then it is not a qualified education expense.

For the year of 2006 tax return, IRS would accept a piece of paper written by you stating the date, items and fair market value of each item. And you should keep it with your tax record. However beginning next year, IRS no longer accept personal records as such. Next time you donate, make sure you get a receipt from them.

Remember you will only benefit from itemizing deductions, the sum is great than standard deduction for your filing status. For most people, without a home (mortgage and property tax) it is not worth bothering with Schedule A.

Best wishes.
