Both cables are referred to as component. In theory, the gold plating offers a better conductor for the electrical current which in turn preserves more of the signal. My sense is that the gold-plated cables are largely produced to bilk audiophiles (those who must have the best of the best in equipment) for more money. In reality, the difference would be so slight that it would not be detectable to the human eye, and is therefore not worth the 50%+ more that you pay for the gold.

The gold plating provides a better contact from the source device to the cable-end and from the opposite cable-end to a destination device. But the cable is still copper between the ends regardless of it being gold or steel plated.

Unless you have an oscilloscope you really can't tell the difference. The gold also provides for a nice look.

You can still purchase a junky gold cable. Most cables link those from Monster are engineer to have special qualities to reduct noise.
